Les mammifères Montiens de Hainin (Paléocène moyen de Belgique) Part II : Les CondylarthresJean Sudre and Donald E. RussellPublished online: 30/12/1982Keywords: Belgium; Condylarths; Louisininae; Oxyclaeninae; Paleocene https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.12.6.173-184 Abstract The Condylarths from Hainin (Hainault, Belgium) show no affinity at the generic level to those known in other Paleocene localities of Europe and North America ; they are described as new forms : Monshyus praevius n. gen., n. sp. and Prolatidens waudruae n. gen., n. sp. Monshyus praevius, discovered in only one of the levels in the excavation at Hainin, is similar to the genera Microhyus TEILHARD and Louisina RUSSELL ; with them it is included in the subfamily Louisininae (Hyopsodontidae). With respect to Microhyus and Louisina, Monshyus is distinguished by the precociously modern aspect of its upper molars, the only teeth that are referable. Prolatidens waudruae, known only by lower molars, was found in several levels in the pit at Hainin. It is an arctocyonid presenting possible relationships to the North American form Oxyprimus galadrielae ; it therefore has been provisionally attributed to the subfamily Oxyclaeninae. If this attribution is confirmed, this species will constitute the first and only representative of the group in Europe. PV article infos Published in Vol. 12, Fasc. 6 (1982) |

Miquel Crusafont i Pairó and P. SondaarPublished online: 31/01/1971Keywords: Hipparion; Late Miocene; Spain; Villafranchian https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.4.2.59-66 Abstract The recently discovered, very rich, Pliocene locality of Layna (Soria, Spain), has already yielded 30 species of mammals. Hipparion fissurae, described here is more dolichopodic than other Hipparion. It is related to Hipparion crusafonti from Villaroya (Villafranchian), but more slender between other characters. Ostéologie de la tête de Richardus excavans Lavocat,1988René LavocatPublished online: 30/10/1989Keywords: Africa; anatomy; Bathyergidae; Miocene; Rodents https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.19.2.73-80 Abstract Remarkable association of a small infraorbital foramen, similar to that in recent Heterocephalus, and of a strong muscular print on the dorsal anterior part of the zygomatic plate and on the premaxillary. Several anatomical structures to be compared with those of Heterocephalus suggest relationships with this genus. Richardus supports the ancestrality of the hystricomorph character in the bathyergids PV article infos Published in Vol. 19, Fasc. 2 (1989) |

Neue Beobachtungen zum Schädel-und Gebiss-Bau der Paulchoffatiidae (Multituberculata,Ober-Jura).Gerhard HahnPublished online: 15/12/1987Keywords: Dentition; Paulchoffatiidae; Portugal; Skull structure; Upper Jurassic https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.17.4.155-196 Abstract The ventral face of the Paulchoffatiinae skull (Multituberculata, Lower Kimmeridgian, Portugal) is new reconstructed. Some details hitherto unknown are added, as the presence of jugals, the structure of the palatine and the extension of the pterygoids. The situation of the m2/ is discussed. Kielanodon hopsoni n. g., n. sp. is erected, known by its upper p3-5/. From Guimarotodon leiriensis the mandible with its dentition is made known. New informations concerning the milk-dentition and the replacement of teeth are also added. PV article infos Published in Vol. 17, Fasc. 4 (1987) |

The microfauna of the Djebel Qafze CaveG. HaasPublished online: 15/09/1972Keywords: Micromammals; Rodents https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.5.5.261-270 Abstract This study examines the microfauna from Djebel Qafze Cave, focusing on mammalian remains, with Microtus guentheri as the dominant species and a notable absence of Cricetinae (hamsters). The richest layers (XVIa, XVII, XVIII) suggest accumulation by raptors, particularly owls, given the high presence of nocturnal species like voles and shrews. Two significant species, Arvicanthis cf. ectos and the newly described Rattus (? Mastomys) nazarensis, are highlighted. Reptiles (gekkos, Ophisaurus) and birds are also present, while hedgehogs and lagomorphs are absent. The findings underscore the role of avian predators in fossil deposition and refine the chronology of regional Pleistocene fauna. PV article infos Published in Vol. 05, Fasc. 5 (1972) |

Owls, caves and fossils. Predation, preservation and accumulation of small mammal bones in caves, with an analysis of the Pleistocene cave faunas from Westbury-Sub-Mendip, Somerset, UK, par Peter Andrews, 1990. The University of Chicago Press, 232 p.Christiane Denys
PV article infos Published in Vol. 22, Fasc. 1 (1992) |

Jaime de PortaPublished online: 20/01/1969Keywords: Columbia; Cretaceous; Fauna; Quaternary; South America https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.2.2.77-94 Abstract A general view is given of the vertebrate faunas, Cretaceous to Quaternary of age, found in Columbia and of their principal characteristics. This view leads to the discussion of the isolation of the South American continent and of the role played by the Bolivar syncline with respect to North American immigrants during the Oligocene. The absence of marine deposits of Oligocene age in the north and northwest of Columbia suggests the possibility of a communication with Central America. This communication would have permitted the passage of hystricomorph rodents, of platyrrhine monkeys, and of colubrids. The non-occupation, until then, of the ecologie niches of these groups would have favored their installation beside the indigenous fauna. In this hypothesis it would no longer be necessary to admit that these vertebrates arrived as «island hoppers ››. The eco-biologic conditions would explain the absence of large-sized forms of North American origin. PV article infos Published in Vol. 02, Fasc. 2 (1969) |

Les Gliridés (Rodentia) de l'Oligocène supérieur de Saint-Victor-la-Coste (Gard).Marguerite HugueneyPublished online: 28/10/1968Keywords: Gliridae; Late Oligocene https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.2.1.1-16 Abstract The locality of St.-Victor-la-Coste (Gard) has yielded, rather abundantly, teeth of two glirids hitherto very poorly known: Glirudinus praemurinus (Freudenberg) and Glirudinus glirulus (DEHM). It has permitted, moreover, new views on the evolution of Peridyromys murinus (POMEL). Study of these forms confirms the late Oligocene age of the fauna, without allowing, however, further precision. A classic in the making : VERTEBRATE PALAEONTOLOGY (4th edition). By Michael J. Benton.Eric Buffetaut
Published online: 27/01/2016 Keywords: Book review; Vertebrate Palaeontology https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.40.1.e1 Abstract When the first edition of Mike Benton’s Vertebrate Palaeontology came out in 1990, sauropods still dragged their tails on the ground, the closest relatives of whales were mesonychids, and Mesozoic birds consisted essentially of Archaeopteryx, Ichthyornis and Hesperornis. Twenty-five years later, the book, now in its fourth edition, is a third longer, in a larger format and sports fine colour plates – in addition to a companion website.
Published online: 25/09/1978 Keywords: Eocene; Quercy Phosphorites https://doi.org/10.18563/pv.8.2-4.181-184 Abstract The few remains recently collected at Ste Néboule (upper Eocene) belong to three genera: the Testudinid Ergilemys, of which it is the oldest occurence in Western Europa, probably Palaeochelys and an unpublished genus, which is peculiar to the Phosphorites du Quercy. Some statements are made on the chelonian fauna as a whole in that région. After the study of some characters proper to the genus Ergilemys, some remarks are made concerning its antecedents and descendants. PV article infos Published in Vol. 08, Fasc. 2-4 (1978) |
